I'm really racking them up with this 5 senses unit! Unfortunately, I didn't hear this gem firsthand as I was teaching, but my classroom aide heard it, and I about died when she told me!
Today we read a nonfiction book about the sense of taste, so we discussed sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and umami. At the end of the book the kids helped create a list of things they learned about the sense of taste, and we listed the 5 flavors we can taste. When a student said umami, another student asked quietly, "What about Daddy?" ...same little guy as the wings. He's gonna keep us on our feet this year for sure! :)
We also started our data booklets today to keep track of our progress with capital letter ID, lowercase letter ID, letter sounds sight word ID, and counting to 100 throughout the year. The kids were so excited! I think this will be a great motivator for them...they want to see their graph go up each time...I couldn't believe their excitement over simply graphing their September data. Kindergartners are so cool like that! :)

(the ice cream themes have to do with the way I display that they've learned different sections on their letter grid and different units of their sight words...not bribery! :) )
